Nondestructive Color Change
The idea is pretty simple, change the color of part of a photograph. Many people know how to do this, but nearly all of the tutorials I've seen on this have been destructive methods. Meaning once you've done it, you lose the original. This tutorial will show you how to change the color in a photograph while keeping the original in tact.
Here is an example of what we will be doing.

In this tutorial we will only be changing the color of her dress.
1. Selecting.
a. Make a new layer and title it Selection and set the opacity to 50%.
b. Select the Brush Tool

. I used a hard, 19 pixel brush.

c. Set your forground to a bright, opposite color of your photo. I used
66FF00 since her dress is red.
d. Select the Selection layer and brush on top of the part you wish to change the color of.
Screen Shot e. It's important that you color inside the lines

.
Screen Shot2. Coloring, the right way.
a. Control + Click (Command + Click on Mac) the Selection layer (on your layers pallet).
b. Hide the Selection layer. If all goes well, you should have a nice set of marching ants around your desired area.
Screen Shot c. Select the original layer (
Background).
d. Click the "Create new fill or adjustment layer" button

on the bottom of the layers pallet. Choose Hue/Saturation from the menu. Make sure your marching ants are still there.
Screen Shot e. Check the Colorize box on the bottom right of the Hue/Saturation window, use the sliders to select your desired color. Click Ok.
Screen Shot3. Notes.
Notice on your layers pallet, you created a new layer after clicking the "Create new fill or adjustment layer" button

. This layer is your color change layer, it controls the coloring of any layer below it. Also notice that it has a mask, the black/white bit next to it. This mask tells it to only effect that selected area.

The most important thing to take note of is that your original layer is still in tact. If you hide the Hue/Saturation and Selection layers, you will see that your image has returned to normal. This saves a lot of headaches down the line and is a better way of performing similar actions.
4. File > Save.. That's it. I hope you enjoyed the tutorial.
