While playing around with effects for my upcoming flash movie (i'll prolly post a link here), I was playing around with text effects that would look cool and appropriate given the mood of my flash. The flash is a informational type thing about the paranormal, giving evidence for and against each case, but that's besides the point. Wink
During the creation of a logo for the "Ghostly Sounds" movie, I thought it would be cool to have a sound orientated logo, but that would be hard to do, since you can't see sound. But you can. It's those things, like in Windows Voice Recorder where when you speak, the green lines go up and down according to the volume of your voice. I decided to re-create this in PS for my logo. This is the basic rundown, I'm sure you can expand and make something like this look cool.

1) Create a new image in PS. I chose 500x400px, but I suppose you can do smaller.

2) Colour the backround anything you want, but I personally prefer black. The effect looks best over black.

3) Write your text. It can be anything, for this I'm using the name of my flash. Colour it white.

4) Duplicate the layer twice, and place them exactly over each other. Select the bottom text layer.

5) Turn 90 degrees (Edit > Transform > Rotate 90 CW).

6) Wind it up (Filter > Stylize > Wind) using the default settings. CTRL+F to repeat.

7) Turn 180 degrees (Edit > Transform > Rotate 180).

Cool Wind it up (Filter > Stylize > Wind) using the default settings. CTRL+F to repeat.

9) Turn it some more so that it's in it's proper position, and move it so that it's right behind the top text layer.

10) Give the top, unedited text layer a cool style.

And I think that's basically it. Add some winding/blurring to the corners to give it that fade-in-fade-out effect, and I think it looks quite cool.

Apologies if this was a bit too nooby for the forums. I just wanted to post something, since nearly everyone else has. Next tutorial I'm going to write is on signature animation.

Nice tutorial man. Cool effect, I've seen stuff similar to it before, but never represented as sound.

Thanks. I played around with it, and it could be used as ice (blue colour and remove upper winding) or even smoke trails (remove down winding and add some gaussian blurr).

Cool. I can definatly imagine that representing sound

I'd sugest blurring the top text by just a little. Vertically, using motion blur

Just noticed that I didn't really finish the tutorial off. That would be the reason why your image ended up as it did, Xale. Sorry!

Added two more steps (9 and 10) to stop confusion. Smiley
