Here is an example of what we will be making.

1. Burning.
a. Open your photo.
b. Duplicate the background layer, you never want to work on the original layer.

Screen Shot d. Using a large soft brush, zoom in and begin brushing around where you want the bruise to be. I chose to put it around his eye.
Screen Shot2. Color.
a. Make a new layer and call it Bruise Color 1.
b. Set your foreground color to
3E3E6D.
c. Brush around the same area as you burned.
Screen Shot d. Open the Blending options for the Bruise Color 1 layer. Use these settings:

86901B.
f. Make a new layer and call it Bruise Color 2. Place it under the Bruise Color 1 layer.
g. Again, brush the same area. This time, only paint the center of the bruise and in any shadows on the person in the photo.
h. Now, switch your foreground and background colors and paint the highlights of the bruise.
Screen Shot i. Open the Blending options for the Bruise Color 2 layer. Use these settings:
Screen Shot j. One more color layer to add, this will be for the darkest purple in the bruise. Make a new layer and call it Bruise Color 3, put it under the Bruise Color 2 layer.
k. Switch your foreground and background colors back. Paint just the most inner part of the bruise, the darkest shadows on the photo of the person. Feel free to add a little more yellow if you think it needs it.
Screen Shot l. Open the Blending options for the Bruise Color 3 layer. Use these settings:
